Nestled on the northern end of the Texas Hill Country in scenic Hamilton County, this ranch is located about 11 miles west of Hamilton. There are about 2.5 miles of gravel road leading into the ranch off of Texas FM 218, taking you up to a scenic and rustic piece of property full of Texas charm. GPS coordinates are N. 31 39.458' W. 098 15.001'. Elevation is about 1285' above sea level. Hamilton has a progressive, highly rated school system and a modern hospital with six doctors. The population of Hamilton is around 3000 people, making it a quiet, peaceful town. There is an airport equipped for light jet aircraft as well. In addition to modern amenities, Hamilton is also rich in history with stories of early settlers and Indian raids. Finding arrowheads and broken flint are not uncommon out at the ranch and adds to the nostalgic Texas charm of this Hill Country setting. Experiencing the great outdoors is a regular pastime in Hamilton. Hundreds of hunters migrate annually to Hamilton county. The area abounds with whitetail deer, turkey, wild hogs, and of course the fast moving mourning and white-wing dove. In fact, the city is known as the Dove Capital of Texas. Three generations of McNairs have enjoyed hunting and fishing at the McNair Ranch. Wildlife food plots can be planted in the creek areas as well as the field areas. Successful dove hunting is achieved by planting food plots of grain sorghums. The avid hunter would discover the Ranch to be a lucrative aid in his quest for hunting adventure. The ranch terrain varies from deep fertile fields in the Cowhouse Creek basin to rough hills with scenic overviews of a seasonal creek with scattered live oak groves, cactus, rock outcroppings and mesquite. On the lower end of the property is the Cowhouse Creek basin The Cowhouse has water in it year round, and runs throughout much of the year. It is one of the largest creeks in the U.S., heading near Priddy, Texas and emptying into Lake Belton near Temple, Texas. The Cowhouse is a very important watershed area and gives much life to this region. Along with being an important watershed, this beartiful creek is teaming with large mouth bass and catfish. The property has some deep water holes along the creek's path through the property, perfect for hooking the big one or swimming in those hot summer months. Perhaps even a creek-side picnic could be the order of the day! In addition to the Cowhouse, the upper portion of this ranch has a seasonal creek that is a tributary to the Cowhouse. From the upper portions of the ranch there are breath taking scenic views with majestic live oak groves, scattered mesquites, and other vegetation native to this area. Pecan groves abounding with squirrels form quiet havens along both creek areas. The McNairs settled on this property in May of 1976 where they relocated from Idaho. Upon the closing of the property deal the McNairs learned they were only the third family to own the property since it was homesteaded in the mid to late 1860's. They could see why early settlers chose this location because of its varying landscape and its panoramic views. This is a working ranch and farm operation and is a very productive property. Mr. McNair planted Coastal Bermuda grass and Tifton 85 Bermuda in some of the creek areas, making great summer grazing and foraging for cattle and wildlife. Nearby cities include: Stephenville with Tarleton State University, Brownwood with Howard Payne University, Gatesville, and Waco with Baylor University, Regional Airport, Major Hospitals, shopping and dining. The ranch is centrally located between Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, and Abilene. Each is 2 1/2 hours away, all having the amenities of larger cities.
